The first item in the file is a Western Union telegram from George M. Pullman in Chicago to Sam Bowles, reporting that the "fire is still raging business part of the city" but that Mary is safe and with the Pullmans. Three subsequent letters have Mary writing from her trip West (Milwaukee and then Denver).
