Scope and Contents

A representative but incomplete collection of several series of books published by the firm of Bernhard Tauchnitz from 1829 to 1954. These series were a familiar source of popular reading for English-speaking travelers on the continent of Europe throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The books in this collection, all inexpensive, paperbound editions, were a direct precursor to mass-market paperbacks. The Collection of British and American Authors (a reprint series published in Leipzig, Germany) was particularly popular, eventually running to over 5,000 volumes.

Abstract

Arrangement

The Tauchnitz Collection is arranged by publication series.

There are eight series:
  1. Series 1: Collection of British and American Authors, 1842-1939
  2. Series 2: Collection of German Authors, 1867-1878
  3. Series 3: Series for the Young, 1862-1877, undated
  4. Series 4: New Series, 1947-1954
  5. Series 5: Students’ Series, 1926
  6. Series 6: Shakespeare Plays Collection, 1868
  7. Series 7: Tauchnitz New Pocket Dictionaries, 1901
  8. Series 8: Pre-Series Tauchnitz Editions, 1829-1839, undated
