Biographical / Historical
James Elmore Ostendarp (1923-2005) was a prominent football coach at Amherst College. He served in the military in WWII, recieved a B.S. degree from Bucknell University and M.S. from Columbia University in 1956. He played professional football for two years with the New York Giants and one year with the Montreal Alouettes. Ostendarp coached at Bucknell, Cornell and Williams before joining the faculty of Amherst College in 1959 as Associate Professor of Physical Education and head coach of the football team; he was named professor in 1966 and remained at Amherst until his retirement in 1992. In 32 years of coaching football at Amherst, Coach Ostendarp compiled a record of 168-91-5.
