Scope and Contents

This record group of RG 003 President's Office Records includes correspondence and bound manuscripts relating to the presidency and other activities of Zephaniah Swift Moore. The single folder of correspondence in the subgroup includes a description of petitioning the Massachusetts State Legislature for a college charter. Also included in this folder: a circular letter requesting financial support for the "collegiate institution" accompanied by a personal note and two notes of invitation to Fredric Hall and William B. Sprague. The record group also contains two bound volumes of addresses and sermons. The first covers the period from 1803 to 1822 and includes what may be the last sermon delivered by Moore before he left has post as pastor in Leicester, Massachusetts to take a position at Dartmouth College in 1811. The first volume contains only manuscripts. The second volume contains only printed addresses and sermons. Neither volume appears to have been assembled by Moore.

Abstract

This collection, part of the President’s Office Records, contains the correspondence, addresses, and sermons of Zephaniah Swift Moore while he served as Amherst College’s first president.

Arrangement

The collection has no further physical or intellectual arrangement other than the three folders.

Custodial History

The provenance of the first seven presidents' sub-groups is cloudy. With a single exception there is no record of when or how these documents entered the College Archives. These records were distributed through the Archives. Most items were in biographical files of individual presidents; some items were filed in the "General Files" (subject files). The College Archives holdings were searched and the records of the first seven presidents were brought together under this Record Group (RG 003).

Processing Information

This collection was originally part of the Early President's Office Records. In preparation for digitizing parts of the collection for the Bicentennial project. Early President's Office Records was folded into the President's Office Records to create a single record group. Each president received their own record group under this new record group.
