Scope and Contents

The papers of Eugene S. Wilson, who was Dean of Admission at Amherst College from 1946-1971. The collection contains his correspondence with Amherst College alumni and deans of admission at other colleges and universities. It also includes speeches, lectures and chapel talks, copies of some of his published works and his working papers for committees and commissions on which he served, as well as documents related to his work on the Advisory Board of Holyoke Community College. Biographical / Historical

Eugene S. Wilson (1905-1981) was a graduate of Amherst College, in the class of 1929. He served as the Amherst College Alumni Secretary from 1939 to 1946 and as Dean of Admission from 1946 to 1971. He was active in the Association of College Admissions Counselors and was at one time its president. In addition, he served as a director of the College Entrance Examination Board and was on the Advisory Board of Holyoke Community College, 1966-1971. As a result of his work at Amherst College and through various organizations, he was known by the time of his retirement as the "Dean of Admissions Deans" in the United States.
