Scope and Contents
Photographs taken by Allan W. Forbes (AC 1908) largely of Amherst College and the surrounding area during his time as a student. Images feature campus and fraternity buildings, students, and landscape and nature views. Also included are images from the first few years after Forbes' graduation. The collection is composed of glass plate and nitrate film negatives as well as photographic prints.

Biographical / Historical
Allan White Forbes (1886-1974) was a member of the Amherst College class of 1908. Following graduation, Forbes returned to Worcester, Mass. where he received a B.S. from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1910 and spent the bulk of his career as an electrical engineer and owner of Forbes and Myers electrical motors company. Forbes was the author of "Our Garden Friends - the Bugs" in 1962 and numerous articles in technical, science and educational periodicals.

Photographs taken by Allan W. Forbes (AC 1908) largely of Amherst College and the surrounding area during his time as a student.
The images in this collection are arranged primarily by material type, with glass negatives in series 1 and nitrate film negatives in series 2. Within each series, images are arranged by the image numbers assigned by Forbes with images lacking numbers grouped at the end of the series. Photographic prints are listed with the associated negative where relevant and listed separately if there is no negative present.
The original negative envelopes were retained and may be viewed on request.
This collection was recieved from Allan Forbes' nephew, Linwood Erskine, Jr. in 1977. It was partially processed in the 1990s. Processing was completed in 2015.
Image numbers, descriptions and dates are taken from the original negative envelopes or notes on negatives and prints wherever possible. Assigned descriptions and dates are noted in brackets.
