Biographical / Historical

Joseph Gerald Cole was born in New York City in 1894 and attended Stuyvesant High School, Amherst College (1915), Columbia University (1916) and the Sorbonne, Paris (1919). During and after World War I he served in the Coast Artillery Corps of the American Expeditionary Forces, 1917-1922, receiving numerous military honors. He was employed in banking and business ventures in Europe and the U.S.; from 1942 to 1944 he served as special assistant to the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. During World War II he served in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), an intelligence service that was the predecessor of the CIA. Cole was a senior economic analyst for the U.S. government until his retirement in 1960.
