Biographical / Historical
William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was an English Romantic poet.
Cornelius H. Patton (1860-1939), Amherst class of 1883 and Trustee of the College from 1905-1939, was a clergyman, author, and collector of Wordsworthiana. Patton published The Rediscovery of Wordsworth in 1935 and The Amherst Wordsworth Collection: A Descriptive Bibliography in 1936.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
This collection contains the manuscripts of 14 sonnets, which were donated by Mrs. Marie H. Clemens as a memorial to her husband, Dr. James Brentano Clemens.
Cornelius Howard Patton, Class of 1883, presented additional Wordsworth manuscripts and a large collection of books by and about Wordsworth to Amherst College in 1930.
