Scope and Contents

Records of various Amherst College committees, including draft, interim and final reports, supporting documents and correspondence. Some committees are formal standing committees, but the majority are ad-hoc temporary bodies often convened as presidential advisory committees or task forces. In many cases, files contain only final reports (sometimes both interim and final reports), rather than supporting documents related to the committee's work in producing those reports.

Additional material from some committees may be available in other collections.

Portions of this collection have access restrictions in accordance with the College's 50-year embargo on administrative records. Restrictions are noted at the file level. In such cases, requests for access should be directed to Archives and Special Collections. In addition, particularly fragile items may be restricted for preservation purposes.

Abstract

Records of various Amherst College committees, including draft, interim and final reports, supporting documents and correspondence. Some committees are formal standing committees, but the majority are ad-hoc temporary bodies often convened as presidential advisory committees or task forces.

Arrangement

The records are organized alphabetically by the main heading or topic associated with each committee. Generic descriptors such as "Committee on…" and "Task Force on…" are omitted. For example, "Committee on Area Studies" would be filed under "Area Studies."

Processing Information

These records were first processed in 2012 by Peter Nelson. A complete review and update of the collection was completed in 2020-2023 by Umaimah Ahmed (AC 2024E), Cole Warren (AC 2024) and Mariah Leavitt. During reprocessing, the files were physically and intellectually integrated; duplicates were removed; restriction periods were determined; and descriptions were updated and expanded.
