Series 1: Tuckerman-Cooper Family Papers, 1802-1908
Scope and Contents
Series 1 contains Sub-series A: Tuckerman Family Materials (1802-1908) and Sub-Series B: Cooper Family Materials (1829-1902):
Sub-Series A, Tuckerman Family Materials, contains documents and photographs from the family of Margaret Tuckerman, the daughter of Dr. Frederick Tuckerman and Alice Girdler Cooper. Frederick Tuckerman was the son of poet Frederick Goddard Tuckerman and Hannah (Anna) Lucinda Jones. Sub-series A also contains materials related to Margaret Tuckerman's great-grandparents Edward Francis Tuckerman and Sophia May Tuckerman, as well as to her great-uncles Edward and Samuel Parkman Tuckerman and their families.
Sub-series B, Cooper Family Materials, contains information relating to the family of Margaret Tuckerman's mother, Alice Girdler Cooper, who was the daughter of James Sullivan Cooper, an attorney in Maine, and his second wife, Abigail Ingersoll Girdler. The Cooper family moved to Amherst from Calais, Maine, in 1866. Margaret's uncles James and Charles (both members of the Class of 1873) were respectively the law partner of William Austin Dickinson (brother of poet Emily Dickinson) and a local doctor. Sub-series B contains a daybook that documents something of James S. Cooper's professional and personal life, as well as photographs of some members of the Cooper family and of their home in Amherst.
