Moore, Zephaniah Swift, 1770-1823
Biography
Zephaniah Swift Moore was born November 20, 1770 in Palmer, Massachusetts. He attended preparatory school in Bennington, Vermont, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1793. He taught for a year in Londonderry, New Hampshire, after graduation. Moore then turned his attention to theological studies. He became ordained as a minister in 1796. He accepted a post in Leicester, Massachusetts, where he became involved in local education - serving as the principal of Leicester Academy. Moore met Phebe Drury of Ward, Massachusetts while in Leicester and they married in January of 1799. In 1811, Moore accepted a position as Professor of Languages at Dartmouth College. In 1815, he was elected to the Presidency of Williams College. In 1821, Moore became the first president of Amherst College. Moore died in 1823.
